If you wait until the moment when you feel completely ready to follow your dreams and you have a sign from the universe and the unconditional approval from your friends and family, you’ll be waiting for a very, very long time.

And most likely, what you want to do won’t end up happening.

I’m learning to apply this to inspiration, too. William Faulkner said,

“I only write when inspiration strikes. Fortunately it strikes at nine every morning.”

We think, or maybe hope, that one day all the pieces of our lives will fit together in a perfect, beautiful way, and that we’ll know exactly what we need to do. We’ll finally feel “ready.”

But, as they say, don’t wait to strike until the iron is hot. Make the iron hot by striking.

In other words, it is your taking action that makes you ready and inspired, not the other way around. I believe people create their own luck by consistently taking the right actions.

Sure, you’ll have times when you feel inspired or actually “ready” to do something, but more often than not, you have to take action in spite of how you feel.

I think that’s one of the secrets to life, really, and especially to making progress. Taking the action you need to even when you don’t feel like it.

Is it fun? Heck no. It’s much more pleasant to wait until you’re inspired and feel a little more confident. But if you only take action when you feel like it, how much progress will you have made a year from now compared to if you put in consistent small steps every day?

Being “ready” for something is largely a state of mind. You will probably not have a moment when you feel like all the stars have finally aligned and it’s your time to finally, finally take action.

Your time is now.

Maybe you have a dream closely pinned to your heart. Maybe you’re afraid to tell anyone about it for fear of what they would think. Or maybe you’re afraid to do anything about it because you’re just scared in general. Or maybe you have told someone and they criticized you.

It’s ok.

Just because someone said that your dream is stupid or that you’re never going to succeed doesn’t mean it’s true.

Here’s something to remember: usually the people who try to crush your dreams are people who had their own dreams crushed. It’s not really about you, it’s about them taking out their pain on the closest target (you).

So if someone tells you’re a failure or you’re wasting your time or that your dreams are a waste of time, try to have compassion. It’s easy to get mad at someone when they wrong you, but the difficult – and better – thing to do is to have compassion for that person who is probably in pain. Try to understand that they themselves are hurting and that’s why they’re trying to hurt you.

And of course, take what they’re saying with a grain of salt.

In other words, a secret just between you and me is that the people trying to discourage you from doing what you’re passionate about or following your dreams are people who once had their dreams crushed. So when someone tells me I’m not going to succeed, instead of getting mad I just sympathize with them because I know deep down that this was probably a person who once had a dream and gave up on it.

It’s easy to criticize other people and complain about the world and be negative, but it’s a true challenge and accomplishment to go after your dreams and be successful at whatever it is you want to do. To be the one in the arena fighting for your dreams, day in and day out.

Don’t listen to the haters, and don’t get drawn into their negativity. They gave up on their dreams a long time ago, but you don’t have to.
