When “It Wasn’t Meant to Be” Isn’t Always True

Sometimes it seems like certain things just aren’t in our fate. But other times, it seems more like a little voice of fear creeping in. Here’s why the phrase “it wasn’t meant to be” isn’t always true.

First I’ll say that I do like to believe that some things are meant to be in life. Maybe not in a literal, this-is-your-destiny-and-you-have-no-free-will kind of way, but just that if you really, really want something, you’ll find a way to make it happen in the end.

But I’ve found that sometimes we use the phrase “it wasn’t meant to be” when it’s possible that the thing we want still could happen, but we’ve just run into a temporary setback or obstacle. That’s the fear talking.

Now, for things like relationships and other people, you could probably say “it wasn’t meant to be” because people all have minds of their own and you definitely can’t force things to happen.

But if you’re going after your goals and dreams, for example, I think when the little phrase “it wasn’t meant to be” comes up, it’s really just the tiny voice of fear inside ourselves.

Even if we fear the worst – that our biggest and brightest dreams aren’t meant to be – it’s possible that we just have to keep trying, or approach things in a different way.

In the Jennifer Lawrence movie Joy, she plays a female entrepreneur who struggles to follow her dreams for a very, very, very long time. She pretty much spends most of the movie suffering from setback after devastating setback.

At any point, it would have been easy for her to give up. She even borrows money from friends and goes deep into debt, and I’m sure when she continues failing, her loved ones would have supported her saying that it just wasn’t meant to be.

But she doesn’t give up. And it’s not until the end of the movie (spoiler alert) that finally, finally she succeeds.

The point is, if something is really, really important to you and you really, really love it, then it IS meant to be. But if it’s not that important to you or you decide you don’t actually like it as much as you thought, it’s ok to let go of old dreams or goals that just don’t fit anymore.

But for the things that you determine are truly meant to be, you just have to keep going and never give up.
