How You Do Anything is How You Do Everything
Even though it might not seem like it, how you do one thing in life or approach one area of your life is generally how you do everything. Here’s why how you do anything is how you do everything.
When I first heard this personal development concept a few years ago, I was in total denial. “What?” I thought. “No way is that true. I put all my effort into my career and zero effort into exercise…”
But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that there are usually some underlying characteristics about how you approach things in life that are the same across a wide variety of areas.
For example, I’m pretty lazy when it comes to exercise (oops). I try to make it as easy as possible and make it part of my everyday activities instead of setting aside a specific time to workout. I might vacuum, walk to the store, do chores, etc, and get my exercise that way.
But I could also say that about other areas of my life, even my business. I like to automate social media, schedule out blog posts, and do things that let me be “lazy.”
So it’s not that one area of my life gets all my attention and the others are completely ignored: I actually do everything in a similar way.
You need to figure out what your natural style of doing things is so you can get better results in all areas of your life. For example, I like putting in a lot of work upfront and then “coasting” for a while, implementing life hacks, doing things that get me the most bang for my buck, leveraging my work multiple times, etc.
For example, I don’t really like cooking because it’s something you have to do repeatedly everyday. But if I were to look at my method for approaching other areas of my life and assume that the way I’m doing things in the best areas of my life can be applied to any area, I might have the idea to cook a large batch of food one day and then save the rest in the freezer or fridge.
Or if I wanted to add some healthy habits to my day, I might add in a walking meditation so I can get exercise AND meditation done at the same time and be super productive.
It might not be the traditional way of doing things, but it would be something that would work with my own natural habits and work tendencies.
So if certain areas of your life are lacking but at least one area is doing ok, try to figure out what you’re doing that’s contributing to your success in that area (or what has worked in the past).
Sure, you can try to push through and force yourself to do things that you don’t like doing, but you’re much more likely to stick with making changes in your life if you can take action in a way that works for you personally and your own style of taking action.
You just have to test things and see what works. 🙂
