1. Morning mantra
Begin each day with a gratitude mantra to kick-start wellness. Before you even climb out of bed, set your mind to recognize the wonders around you, and how lucky you are. “I am so grateful for everything I have” will do the trick. Remind yourself of what’s in your life that warms your heart and makes you joyful. Forget about concerns, just focus on what contributes to your joy. Or as suggested by Olympic champion Michael Phelps, say a positive affirmation every time you pass through a doorway.
2. Breathe in gratitude
You’ve begun the day well, but don’t let thankfulness slide. Regularly breathe in feelings of appreciation. Recall what makes you feel abundant. Perhaps, you have an abundance of flowers in your garden, or you have love, friendship, or work that makes you happy. It doesn’t matter what you consider, as long as it contributes to your well-being. As you think of what brings you joy, inhale, imagining positive feelings infusing your body with gladness.
3. Say thank you
You can take advantage of many chances to express your gratitude throughout the day; you need only to remember to do so. Wave and smile at other drivers who give way to you, and say thank you for even the smallest of kind gestures people make. If someone steps out of the way to give you more room to pass on the pavement, be grateful. If someone makes a point of acknowledging you when you enter a room, say thanks.
4. Change your mind about small problems
You may face many small grievances every day, but you can use gratitude to change your attitude about them. For instance, if you’re angry about someone taking your usual parking space, rather than getting upset about where it should be parked, be grateful you have a car. If the local store’s run out of your favorite snack, be grateful you have a local shop. Behind every complaint is a reason to be glad.
