When We Refuse to Accept What Is
One time when I logged into the dashboard for Resilient it sporadically gave me an error message. Sometimes it had a 500 Internal Server Error, or it said I was out of memory, or it just gave me the white screen of death, but then sometimes I’d refresh the screen and it was fine again. Here’s what happens when we refuse to accept what is.
So I kept refreshing the page, hoping it would fix itself, and refusing to accept the current state of things. And that’s why was frustrated – I was refusing to accept reality. I was attaching myself to a certain outcome of how I’d like things to be, and when things weren’t the way I wanted them to be, I was frustrated.
I think you can see where I’m going with this. 🙂 (Of course I had to turn my technical snafu into a life lesson and blog post. Silver linings). We suffer because we grasp so tightly onto an idea of how things should be, but then when they’re not like that in reality, we’re disappointed or frustrated or angry or upset.
If people don’t respond the way we want or disagree with us or we fail at something or make a mistake or someone gets mad at us, we get upset. It’s natural. But sometimes we get so attached to thinking that everything has to be a certain way, that it has to be perfect, that we refuse to accept what it actually is. Sometimes what it is is beautiful in its own way.
Maybe you think your significant other should be more supportive of you. Maybe that’s true, but it’s also blinding you to all the good things about them. When you focus only on how things should be different than the way they are now, you’re losing the opportunity to see the beauty in the present, radically accepting your reality and all its imperfections.
If we continue with the significant other example, I’m sure if you think about it you can remember many reasons why you fell in love with them in the first place. Focus on that instead of what’s frustrating you right now. Maybe they’re just in pain and they’re taking it out on you. It’s not nice, but it’s what we tend to do.
When we refuse to accept what is, we lose out on the beauty of the present moment. If you constantly live in the past or the future, you miss out on a huge part of your life. Maybe you’re a long way from reaching your goals in the future or you miss the way things used to be in the past, but you can always find something to appreciate about the present.
And as for my tech problem? Getting mad is not going to fix it. I have to accept the reality, which is that something is broken and needs to be fixed. That’s all it means. It’s not personal – I just have a tech problem on my hands, and that can be resolved.
The next morning, I woke up and it was working again.
