Sometimes there are just days in life when it feels like everything sucks. Here’s a timeless tip for what to do when everything sucks.
What to Do When Everything Sucks
(You’re not going to like this :))
Ok, so when you’re having a bad day being grateful is probably the thing you least want to do in the world. But it can seriously shift your perspective in just a few minutes and turn things around in your mind. Your feelings and struggles are still valid, of course, but you can choose to change the way you see things.
I say in your mind because there are times when you may – for some reason or other – have to stay in a difficult situation for a while. Maybe it’s not possible right now to actually change your circumstances, or maybe something happened and now you just have to heal from it. Changing your situation can definitely be a huge help for how you feel, but if you’re stuck with something for the time being, gratitude is one thing that will make it easier to get through.
So, how do you be grateful? Well, take this example. One time I was starting to feel really claustrophobic in my tiny apartment in the city. It’s was about 150 square feet back then, to give you an idea. I felt like I just had to get out of my apartment. So I did.
And while I was out roaming the city, I saw several homeless people just on the few streets I was on, though I know for a fact you can find homeless people in every corner of the city. Suddenly, instead of grumbling about my apartment not being good enough, I felt very grateful.
Grateful that I wasn’t homeless.
Grateful that I had a roof over my head.
Grateful that I had my own shower and bathroom (an upgrade from a dorm room!).
Grateful that I had cupboards and a fridge (ok, a micro fridge :)) full of food.
Grateful that I had a warm bed to crawl into at night and clothes to wear and choices for shoes and outfits and accessories.
Gratitude turns what you have into enough.
And when I got back to my apartment, it didn’t feel quite as small anymore. Nothing had actually changed about my apartment, but my attitude had changed. And attitude, in the end, is everything.
As Pitbull says,
“Any day above ground is a great day. Remember that.”
