What should you do when you’re trying to reach your goals and you have a setback? Here’s how to react when you have a setback in life.
How to React When You Have Setback in Life
“Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.” –Dalai Lama
Maybe you’re following your dreams and someone tells you to give up. Maybe you’re rejected from something. Maybe you fail when it matters most. Maybe you disappoint everyone around you.
But you know what? It’s ok. This kind of thing happens to everyone (even people who seem to be really successful or have it all together. Here’s a secret: no one really has it all figured out :)).

Consider the quote from the Dalai Lama above. Maybe there’s a good reason that you didn’t get what you wanted or things fell apart or you failed somehow. Maybe you just can’t see it now, but one day, you will.
Maybe things in your life aren’t falling apart, but falling into something new and better.
So what do you do?
You keep going. You keep trying. And you never give up.
If this is something important to you, don’t give up. Maybe you need to reconsider things. Does it have to work out exactly in a certain way, or is there more than one path to your ultimate goal?
Sometimes what we’re seeking isn’t a particular material goal, but the feeling we’d have when we achieve it. For example, maybe you want to work for a certain company. But what feeling are you actually going after? Do you want the security of having a stable job, or do you want the creativity, heart, and hustle of working for someone innovative and fresh? Those are very different feelings and goals.
Maybe there’s more than one way to answer the question. Keep looking and keep moving forward, and be open to the idea that your original plans might not be the ultimate plans that end up working.
Maybe there’s something better in the works. You just have to keep going.
What to Do When You Hit an Obstacle in Life
So you’re going through life floating merrily along and then BOOM, you hit an obstacle. It’s easy to get discouraged and give up, but here’s what you should do when you hit an obstacle in life, in whatever journey you may be on.
“If the wind will not serve, take to the oars.” –Latin Proverb
First of all, DON’T PANIC.
Obstacles are just there for you to prove how much you want something. A lot of people give up when the journey gets tough, but that’s when you have to buckle down and get to work and try even harder.
Usually when you hit some kind of roadblock, you have to go through it rather than around it. (Of course if there’s an easy solution then that’s good, but I’m assuming you’ve hit something challenging). Sometimes the challenge is emotional and internal, and sometimes it’s other people or outside forces.
If you’re rejected, for example, try to accomplish your goals another way, try again, or find another way. Get creative. There’s more than one way to get to the same end point.
If the challenge is coming from within, work on your mindset and beliefs. Read something inspiring and motivational every day until you start to believe in yourself. Watch Rocky or Mulan! Do what it takes to get through this emotional slump and get back on track.
Don’t let a little obstacle stop you from following your dreams. Keep going and never give up.
