Acting confident even when you aren’t can benefit you in many ways. People are less likely to take advantage of someone who appears to be confident. More confident people are more open to trying new things. This article outlines 5 ways that you can act more confident.
How To Act Confident
1. Be more assertive
There is a middle ground between being passive and being aggressive and that point is called assertive. It’s important to be assertive because you don’t want people to walk all over you because you are too passive. If people know that you never say “no,” they will continue to ask you for favours. Being able to say “no” now and then is a good way to be confident in yourself. Remember that saying no doesn’t make you mean or selfish.

2. Be optimistic
Someone who is confident doesn’t constantly complain about how badly their life is going and how they can’t get ahead. If you want to appear confident, you must act as though you believe in yourself, even if you don’t just yet. Stop complaining about your life and instead talk about the great things you’re doing and plan to do. The more optimistic you act, the more confident you will seem to those around you and you’ll start feeling it yourself.
3. Improve your posture
Someone who stands tall looks more confident than someone who is always slouching with their head down. Whether you are walking down the street or sitting in a coffee shop, be aware of your posture and hold your head up high. Smiling at people and looking them in the eye when talking to them is also a way to exude confidence.
4. Do something that scares you
Being confident means you have enough faith in yourself to try new things. Trying new things will also boost your self-esteem. You’ll feel stronger and more courageous after doing something for the first time. Sometimes in order to do something that scares you, you have to act more confident than you really are. It’s not uncommon to realize that things are usually less scary than you thought they would be. When people ask you to try something new, don’t say “no” because you’re nervous. Say “yes” to gain more confidence.
5. Brag a little
You’ve probably seen friends and family on social media announce they have a new job, are expecting a baby, or have bought a new house. You don’t have to wait until you have a huge announcement to brag about something in your life. If you’ve finally lost those last 5 pounds, tell everyone! If you sold an article to your dream publication, go ahead and brag. Don’t be shy and think it’s rude to show off. It shows confidence when you post your accomplishments. People in your life are going to be proud of you and let you know it, which will also boost your confidence.
You don’t have to be a confident person in order to implement these ideas. You can gain confidence over time by practicing these habits. After a while you won’t just be pretending to be confident, you will be confident.
