Last year I spent 6 months living in a micro studio in the city and although my friends and family looked at me like I was crazy, I secretly loved it. My apartment was about 150 square feet. Total.
It was basically like a dorm room.

I had no kitchen, no living room, almost no furniture (just a bed and desk), and no bathroom sink. It was just me and my tuxedo cat. 🙂

It was one small room with a bed, built-in shelves, microwave, and fridge, and a tiny bathroom with a toilet and shower stall.
It was minimalist living at its finest. 😃 And I loved that I got to live downtown in an otherwise very expensive city.
How I Lived in a Micro Studio
To be honest, I don’t need much to be happy.
Sometimes I work from home all day, and sometimes I used to walk over to the co-working space I worked out of.
I had everything I needed, and nothing excess. Moving in was a breeze.
The thing I love about minimalism is that it’s so freeing. Physically because you don’t have much stuff (and no clutter), but also mentally because you have nothing to worry about and no responsibilities except the ones you choose.
I didn’t have anything to clean or take care of, so instead I had time to meditate, walk, and write several blog posts a day. I didn’t worry about buying a new iPhone every year or updating my wardrobe with the latest trends.
I reject shopping for the sake of shopping, and instead I live lightly and freely and never have to worry about keeping up with the Joneses or maintaining certain outside appearances to impress people.
Instead I invest my time and money into things I actually care about.
If you’re stressed out or anxious, I would encourage you to look into the minimalist lifestyle. Being surrounded by constant clutter makes it very easy to be stressed out and anxious all the time. Your external environment is just mirroring your internal stress.
Decluttering on the other hand, is very freeing. Not just cleaning or organizing, but actually getting things out of your house for good and committing to not bringing in new junk (only things you really need).
Think about how much mental space and energy you could free up if you didn’t have to worry about piles and piles of possessions. You may have bought them in the first place because you subconsciously thought they would make you feel happier or more fulfilled, but material possessions won’t make you happy. That’s an inside job.
And when you live lightly, you have plenty of time to work on things like improving yourself and becoming a happier person.
I’ve since moved into a bigger apartment, and although I do like having things like a full-size fridge and a bathroom sink, I’ll always remember the time I spent in the micro studio as simple, uncluttered, and freeing.
