Could you be unknowingly sabotaging your happiness? Maybe you feel like, for every step forward you take, it’s three steps back. And you’re just never getting ahead. Just as important as making progress toward a happier and better life is making sure you don’t backslide into old or destructive habits. Here are 7 sneaky ways you might be sabotaging your happiness.
7 Sneaky Ways You Might Be Sabotaging Your Happiness
When you’re aware that you’re doing something, then you can work on improving it. 🙂
This sounds like a different problem, but you could be sabotaging your newfound happiness by eating too much (or too much unhealthy food) and sabotaging your health. It’s like one area of your life is starting to go well so you start tearing down another part to even things out.
“Retail therapy” can be a way that you’re actually making things worse, not better. It might make you happy in the short time to buy an entire new wardrobe when you’re feeling depressed, but ultimately it will probably just lead to spending problems.
3. Drinking too much
This is a way to numb out so you don’t have to feel things you don’t want to. Binge drinking or going out partying too much could be a way that you’re sabotaging things in your life.
4. Watching mindless tv or playing video games for hours
This is different than the occasional Netflix binge or video game. It becomes a problem when you find yourself coming home from work and vegging out all night in front of a screen to de-stress when you should be actually doing things.
5. Starting fights with your loved ones
Sometimes when things are going too well in our lives, we pick fights with people or criticize them because we’re uncomfortable with how good things are. It’s almost like you’re holding your breath just waiting for the other shoe to drop when things are suspiciously “ok” in life, and when it doesn’t happen when you expect it to, you start to push things along (hence sabotaging things without even being aware of it). It sounds ironic, but it could definitely be a sneaky way you’re sabotaging your happiness. If you find yourself getting mad for no reason, maybe this is what you’re unwittingly doing.
6. Beating yourself up
Even if you’re doing well, you might still criticize yourself or have negative self-talk. So you could be making progress but then you get uncomfortable with the changes so instead of celebrating your small wins, you focus completely on what you did wrong and overly criticize yourself. Focus on the good instead!
7. Pushing too hard
Are you overworking or a workaholic? While it might sound like a good thing to work hard, it becomes a problem when you get burned out from working way too much and never relaxing. Let yourself relax every now and then, and take breaks.
Are you doing any of these things? Awareness is the first step. Then work to replace the negative habit with a new, positive one that makes you happier. 🙂 You can do it.
