1. You’re making excuses

If you make excuses about why you can’t do something, you are holding yourself back. Stop saying you’re too tired or you have no time. The truth is you do have time for things you really want to do. How many times have you chosen to watch Netflix for three hours before bed instead of working toward a goal you have?

If you want to achieve that goal, you need to stop making excuses that let you off the hook. Everyone has the same number of hours in the day, but it’s how you choose to spend them that determines whether you are successful.

2. You worry too much about being a people-pleaser

If you are a people-pleaser, you are holding yourself back because you put everyone before yourself. You will drop anything you’re working on at anytime to help someone else. To be willing to help people is a wonderful quality as long as you don’t allow yourself to become a doormat. In order to spend time focusing on yourself and your dreams, there will be many times you will have to say “no.”

If you worry about people being upset with you for not catering to their needs, you’ll continue holding yourself back until you realize you’re being used and manipulated.

3. You surround yourself with the wrong people

If you’re ambitious and passionate about your goals, you should surround yourself with like-minded people. If the people in your inner circle are lazy and encourage you to slack off, you are holding yourself back. There are people, even close friends, who will not want to see you get ahead. They will sabotage your success if you allow them to. You want friends who are ambitious and will encourage you to chase your dreams.

Think about how you spend time with the people in your life. Do you discuss books you’ve read or do you gossip about other people? Do you share dreams or do you bad-mouth people who are successful?

4. You’re settling for less than your potential

If you do the minimum amount of work, it’s unlikely you’ll get very far in your life. If you want to get ahead, you have to think bigger and take risks. If you have a dream, stop telling yourself it’s too big or you don’t have the skills to achieve it.

Stop settling for smaller, easier dreams and goals and go after what you really want no matter the time or energy it might require. Don’t be afraid to think big. Know that you might not get exactly where you hope to, but at least you won’t be in the same place you started.

If you want to get ahead in your life, whether your goals are large or small, it requires a break from your normal routine. You must change where you spend your energy and your time. If you focus on getting ahead, you will get ahead.
