“At times the world may seem an unfriendly and sinister place, but believe that there is much more good in it than bad. All you have to do is look hard enough. And what might seem to be a series of unfortunate events may in fact be the first steps of a journey.”
― Lemony Snicket
I LOVE this quote.
I don’t know if you ever read A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket when you were a kid, but I loved these books. It’s a thirteen book series that follows three unlucky siblings in the aftermath of their parents’ death, flitting between different relatives and trying to find their way in the world.
I remember thinking of this quote a few years ago when I was really depressed and crying about the way my life was. I hadn’t read the books in years, but for some reason I remembered this quote and it instantly comforted me.
Here’s the thing: the world is many, many things all at the same time. It is good and bad, evil and noble, happy and sad, positive and negative. You choose what you see in the world.
You can see the good in people, or you can focus on the negative. The world is no better or worse than it was fifty years ago, or one thousand years ago. It’s just different.
Sometimes it’s hard to see the good, but it’s always there, just waiting to be discovered. All you have to do is look hard enough.
Your life may not seem very good right now, but believe me, there’s always something good you can find. No matter how small. Maybe just the fact that you’re still breathing.
And even if there is no good, maybe you’re going through what you’re going through right now for a reason. Maybe you can’t see the reason yet, but one day you will. One day it will all make sense, and you’ll understand why you had to go through this season of your life.
Maybe this is just the beginning of your journey.
Oh, and one more life lesson: I learned from Violet Baudelaire, the eldest sister of the siblings, that any problem can be solved by tying up your hair and getting to work. To this day when I need to think or get a new perspective on things, I put my hair in a ponytail. 🙂
