If It's Not Working, Don't Keep Doing It

This is a lesson I learned this summer from a friend.

If it’s not working, don’t keep doing it.

It sounds simple, maybe even stupidly simple, but it’s something we resist all too often.

Let’s give an example. Maybe you feel awful all the time and you’re always tired and kind of depressed.

And when you look at what you’re doing each day, you see that every day after work, you sit down in front of the tv and veg out for the next several hours with a pint of ice cream. Every day.

You may have tried eating healthy a few times or doing some other activity other than watching reality tv after work, but you didn’t stick with the new habits for very long and soon after you went back to your old ways. But then you wonder why you still feel awful all the time.

It’s because you’re continuing to do something that’s not working.

And a lot of times, we do know why we feel bad, deep down, but we keep doing what we’ve always done because it’s easier and more familiar. And change is hard.

But if you want to change something about your life, you have to change something in your daily actions and habits. That’s all it is. Tiny changes each day adding up to a whole new life.

If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll get the same results you’ve always gotten.

“If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.” – Thomas Jefferson
