Today I walked to the grocery store and started shopping for, of course, groceries. I was browsing through the store picking things out and putting them in my cart and I even took the elevator up to the second floor with the cart (which is a tiny bit of a hassle).
How to Turn a Bad Day Around Quickly
And then I was in the pet food aisle looking at cat treats for my future kitten (I like to plan ahead :)) and I realized that I didn’t bring any money. I checked my purse and no debit card, no money, nothing.
At first I was like, Nooooooooo! but honestly that reaction only lasted a few minutes. Because I realized then and there how much I’ve changed as a person just in the last few years. A few years ago this would have ruined my entire day and it would have turned into hateful self talk, like “Wow, you always mess things up, don’t you? Can’t you do anything right?”
Here’s what I did differently. This time I kind of laughed it off and instantly went to what I was grateful for (gratitude is powerful stuff). First of all, I live a 5 minute walk away from the grocery store (chose my apartment carefully so I could walk everywhere. Yay being eco friendly!). Second, I have two perfectly capable legs so what was I really going to complain about anyway? Third, I only had a few things in my cart and I wasn’t in any hurry to be anywhere, so it really didn’t matter if I had to go back home.
So, I left my cart on the second floor and started walking home.
And on the way home, I ran into Starbucks (because I live basically right next to Starbucks :)). I LOVE Starbucks. But I’m on a budget so I haven’t gotten coffee out in a very long time.
At this point I didn’t really feel bad anymore about leaving my money at home, but I thought it might help to take time for myself and treat myself to something special. Partially because a salted caramel mocha makes any day better, and partially because forgetting my money at home was probably a sign that I was starting to get stressed out and frazzled, and thus was forgetting things.
And when you’re stressed out and frazzled, it’s easy to make a bad day worse. But instead, take control of the situation and remember what you’re grateful for and then take time to do something that makes you happy.
When you’re having a bad day, what you need isn’t criticism and negativity but a little extra TLC and self care. Take care of yourself, especially the days when you need it most. 🙂
