If I gave just one piece of advice to someone struggling with depression, it would be this. It’s deceptively simple, but it has the power to change your life:
Happiness is not external. Happiness comes from within. You have to choose to be happy.
So no matter how many friends you have or don’t have, who loves you or who breaks up with you, what the number on the scale is, what kind of clothes you wear, your grades, where you get into college, what your major is or what classes you’re good at, what job you have, that piece of chocolate cake you ate, if you use drugs or alcohol, or what you look like, these things will never make you happy. Maybe for a moment, but not long term.
If you want long term happiness, it comes from within. It’s a choice you make. You choose to be happy. No one can make you recover, no one can make you better, and unfortunately, no one can save you. Because you save yourself. You change your own life.
But that’s the beautiful thing. You don’t have to wait around for your knight in shining armor to sweep you off your feet. Because the key to happiness is always with you, and at any moment you can choose to be happy. Choose to get help, choose to surround yourself with positivity, choose to eliminate the negative influences in your life, choose to practice gratitude, choose to take care of yourself, choose to be at peace with yourself instead of staging a war that doesn’t have to continue. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
Once you realize that your life is completely in your own hands, that this is a journey that you must take responsibility for, then you start to recover.
